Many readers have difficulty with short vowel sounds. Proper key words are important. Some words are not pronounced with clear short vowel sounds. For instance, when vowels are followed by some letters the sound is altered by the articulation of the next letter, as in egg and igloo. Other letters “hide” the vowel because students hold on to the second letter, such as the “l” in elephant, “m” in umbrella, or “i” in insect. Dialect can impact pronunciation of other vowels, such as with the word orange.
