Word Sliders have multiple uses for young readers

  • You can use the short vowel sliders to learn the concept of rhyming.
  • You can use them for the phonological awareness activity of changing the first sound in a word, as in, “Say pat, now say pat again but instead of /p/ say /b/ (bat).”
  • You can use them for beginning decoders, making sound blending a word easier by only changing the first sound but keeping the ending the same.

The 3 short vowel slider sets (Sets 1-3) generally progress from the name of the slider picture, to 3 letter words, with easiest letters to blend first (such as f, h, j, l, m, n, r, s, v, w, y, or z), to 4 letters, starting with digraphs and then beginning blends. You can print a total of 2 sliders for each picture card, or double-side on heavy paper, so that you have one strip for each picture card. Double sided printing is facilitated by extra wide bands of color to compensate for inaccuracies in printing. Cut guide-lines help with cutting them out. Card stock works well if available. If double-sided printing doesn’t work for you, print all 4 pages separately.

Set 3 Includes three documents, all on letter size paper:

One document has picture cards (two on each of 5 sheets of paper), the second and third are the strips for the word sliders, to be printed on letter size paper. Because this website will only allow one download per product, when you order you will be able to download the 5 pages of card pictures, and the 2 documents with the actual slider strips will then be emailed to you. You do need to cut the slots in the card pictures for the strips to slide through.

One document has the card pictures, two on each of 6 pages, and

2 documents contain the actual slider strips for changing initial sound(s).

  • Endings: am, ab, an, it, in, ing, od, -x, ock, ut, uck, unk. The x slider changes both inital sound and the vowel.
